Day 42 - Newport, OR

Today, we headed north to the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport. I have been to Newport numerous times though I don't remember going to the aquarium before. None of it looked familiar though some of the displays looked like the Monterey Bay Aquarium such as the jellyfish. I think the MBA even used the same shae of blue to backlight these jellyfish.

It was a challenge to take pictures of the many fish as the only way to avoid reflections was to place the iPhone right against the glass and wait for something to swim by. No names of the fish as I don't remember what the sign said. This one actually has yellow stripes but they don't show up very well.

This is the first place I've been to that had these underwater plastic walkways. This was the longest of three and the tank had the sharks in it. There were viewing ports in the floor but not enough light got down there to see much of anything.
We did find two geocaches at the aquarium. One inside the gate and one just outside.

About 1pm, we started to look for lunch and Trobairitz left a very timely comment on my last post letting us know about the Chowder Bowl near Nye Beach in Newport. There was a line but since there were only two of us, we didn't have to wait long. I had the chowder and an oyster sandwich. No photos as they didn't sit around very long.

After lunch, we headed south to our B&B called the Seaquest Inn. Very nice place right on the beach. Low tide was late afternoon so we walked out our patio door onto the beach and down to the tidepools. Most had sea anemones and lots of jellyfish. The last photo is a pano from about 30m from the patio door.

Added: Sunset video from the B&B.

  1. Glad you made it to the Chowder Bowl. Hope you liked it. There is always a line up, but it is the best in town.

Nice you caught low tide too. It is fun to look at the sea life in the tide pools.

    1. The chowder bowl was great though the chowder at dinner in Yachats was its equal. Both phenomenal.

The tide pools were nice though the strong wind wanted to blow us off the rocks. It's a wonderful location.

    2. It always seems to be windy at the coast. The main reason we could never live right at the ocean. Sure was a pretty sunset though.

  2. Oh my goodness, I can't believe I've missed so much in just a couple of days ... Terrific picture of the jellyfish. Isn't it lovely to be able to open the patio door and find a tidal pool. Glad to see you both smiling and enjoying the trip.
ps ... I loved that you have a tradition of cooking some family recipes at the reunion. Every family reunion should teach the younger generation about the family traditions and recipes.

    1. ps - From my spot on the Bay of Fundy I got to watch the sunrise, seems appropriate that you, on the west coast, would see the sunset.

    2. Not sitting waiting for repairs to be done for a change, eh? Having the beach at your door is wonderful and I don't think I'd ever get tired of the sound or smell of the ocean. Though I do like the shallow beaches with lots of wave action better.

I was looking forward to sunset...

  3. You'd think, my having grown up as a teenager in Miami, FL, that I'd be a beach person. Still, it looks like you guys stayed at a great location.

    1. It was good. The hosts are wonderful. I hear that their breakfast is wonderful. I'd recommend it to anyone. I wish we were staying longer.

I'm not really a beach person either but I enjoy the sound and smell of salt water...

  4. It's that sound and smell of salt water that I really miss and such a treat for someone so normally far away from it. I can close my eyes though and .....
