Day 37 - Corbett, OR

I give up trying to seperate travel days from non-travel days and will revert back to calendar days. Thursday, July 24th is day 37 of my trip. I took off from Corvallis before 8 am for my appointment at Raceway Ural at 9 am. I set the Garmin for "No Highways" and blindly followed. It took me on a wonderful route and I recognized some of the roads from when Troubadour gave me a ride into Salem last week. I didn't check the "No Ferries" box and quite unexpectedly was led to a ferry landing! Definitely the best part of the trip.

After letting the rig cool down a bit, Raceway checked the timing and it had slipped. It was so far off (retarded i.e. spark plug firing late) that the timing mark wasn't even visible in the little window. After carefully adjusting the timing by moving the hall sensor, I took the rig for a test ride and all was right again. Plenty of low end torque, no popping, easily accelerated to 55 mph and beyond. And hopefully, better gas mileage. I also added 200 ml of oil.

With the GPS still set at "No Highways" I took off for Corbett, OR, the location of this year's family reunion. The GPS stating that it was 1 hr 7 min away. Garmin kept wanting me to take 99E but after looking at Google Maps, I thought 211 looked more interesting. There needs to be an "Interesting" option on the GPS.

Three hours later, I pulled into the Menucha Retreat Center, the location of the reunion just off the Columbia Historic Highway just a bit west of Vista House. There is a great view of the Columbia River and Vista House from the pool deck. I think I used that for a header photo a couple of years ago. I definitely found a more interesting route with lots of steep, narrow, winding roads. This picture was taken near sunset from the patio at Menucha looking towards Portland. This must be like the 10th time we've had the reunion at this location so it's a very familiar venue.

    1. Thank you. About 63 relatives here. And it's not miserably hot so that's really nice.

    1. Starting on Monday, Bridget and I are visiting the Oregon coast on the Ural. That's one reason it was important to get it running right.

  3. So glad to hear the Ural is working well now. I remember following the Columbia after Portland. There were some beautiful views and looks like you captured one for sure. Enjoy the reunion and the rest of your adventure. (You've lost track of how many riding and how many waiting days ... soon you will loose track of time altogether and you will have to ask us, "What day is it?"

    1. This place does have a great view. I'll post a picture looking the other direction on the river later. And yes, I tried keeping track of the days on a calendar but lost track after a while. Kind of nice....

      So what day is it?

  4. Cool! Great pic of the ferry landing. I think everything should have am "interesting option" beats plain and boring any day. Hope your Ural keeps behaving & you don't have anymore issues.

    1. I was really surprised when I came upon the ferry landing. Completely unexpected.

I hope there are no other Ural problems either.

  5. I am glad Raceway got you sorted in a hurry and you could still ride to the reunion. Sounds like you stumbled upon Buena Vista Ferry. There are a few in these parts to get across the rivers.
