Day 19 - Medford, OR

First day on the road. Just Corvallis, OR, to Medford, OR. About 215 miles. I looked for free/cheap parking using the AllStays app and, apparantly, overnight parking seems to be banned just about everywhere by city ordinances. I guess the RV parks must of complained loudly to local city government. This seems to be the case in Fairbanks as well as the city is considering a ban on overnight parking. Too many people taking advantage of Walmart. So we are in a somewhat overpriced but very nice private RV park on the southside of Medford. Since it was 930 miles from Corvallis to our next reserved site in Anaheim, CA, I figured that 200 miles per day was a pretty modest goal.

  1. At least the park you are at is nice.

They banned most overnight parking/sleeping in Corvallis too. Mainly to keep people from sleeping in their cars. A law against the homeless but RV'ers were collateral damage. Might be the same in other cities.

    1. Comments left on some of the sites suggest that Walmart may have changed their policy. As in sending out employees telling people to move on...

    2. We tried parking a motorhome in a Wal-Mart parking lot overnight in Newport back in 1994 as we needed supplies the next day. We were awakened in the middle of the night by a State Trooper knocking on the door and telling us to move.

  2. I think Walmart loves people parking in their lot, it serves both parties, we had 5 RV's at our Walmart yesterday, and Sharon helped a woman find that very special sized waste basket for their RV. When we traveled down the PCH a couple of years ago, the couple we traveled with belonged to some type of group that had member parks all over the the west. The parks had full amenities and were real nice. But the parks weren't made for motorcycle and jeep. It's really something to look into. One thing we did notice is that RV's usually start shutting down by 3:00 and all the spaces are pretty much taken by 4:00 that goes for bikers using motels. Have fun travel safe, following you both.

    1. I think you're right. But if other places are like Fairbanks, some RVs stay for weeks at a time. Essentially abusing the privilege and turning it into an "entitlement".

  3. This is a worrisome confirmation. What about places like Loves, Pilot truck stops and such? Have you tried those?

    1. There weren't any where we were planning to stop. I've noticed that some of the truck stops want reservations to stay in their overnight parking slots. Maybe it's just because it is crowded on the west coast...

  4. Long ago we found that some Walmarts are open to overnight, and some aren't. I believe AllStays will tell you which Walmarts will allow it.
