Day 49 -

Just a quick update. It has been on the warm side here in the Willamette Valley even though the skies were overcast. Sunday afternoon was spent driving to Portland and back dropping Bridget off at the airport for her trip back to Fairbanks. There was a lot of traffic on the highway heading into Portland especially later in the afternoon.

Yesterday (Monday) morning I took the rig out for a spin to see if Dan, aka Irondad, was in at the Team Oregon office south of Corvallis. I was told that he was teaching that day so I just left an old school message (paper and pencil). I also spent some time sorting through my gear getting it packed back into the sidecar. I had removed all of the camping gear and some of the tools and spare parts before our trip along the coast. While riding today, it was kind of lonely to look over at the sidecar and see an empty seat.

The batteries in the Spot tracker had died at the end of the second day of the coast trip. This model, the Spot 2, uses 3 lithium AAA batteries and my extra batteries were in the pile of stuff I had left back in Corvallis. This is the first time I've changed them on this trip so they last for quite a while. I had tried using alkaline batteries instead of the lithium batteries once and they only lasted about three days.

Today (Tuesday), I drove to Beaverton with my mom and niece to visit my cousin at there new home. We had dim sum for lunch which was a real treat as there are no good dim sum places in Fairbanks. I lost track of the number of small plates we had but it was all delicious.

On Thursday, I'm heading south by car for Chico, CA, to attend a wedding. After that, the trek north begins.

  1. Sigh, I haven't had a half decent dim sum since returning to Germany... just don't count me in on the chicken feet...

    1. I'll pass on the chicken feet as well. But never pass on the sticky rice wrapped in some kind of leaves.

  2. At least you are staying busy. It is cute that you missed Bridget being there with you in the sidecar.

  3. Dim Sum, best eaten without asking what it is, trust me.

    1. It's surprising what some consider "food". But then again, it's usually pretty tasty...

  4. I've no idea what Dim Sum is and as of now, quite content at least for the time being to keep it that way. Someday? Probably.....

I've been surprised though to be fair, was told that "good" AA batteries would last much longer in my GPS and they do. :)

    1. You should definitely try Dim Sum if the opportunity presents itself. Kind of like a bunch of appetizers or tapas.

  5. My first introduction to real Chinese food was Dim Sum. Wish I had enjoyed it with you. It is hard for me thinking about going back to work next week with you still out and about on the Ural.

  6. Richard, it's hard to believe it has been 49 days that you have been on the road (or waiting to be.) By the sounds of it, Bridget misses being in the sidecar as much as you miss seeing her there...but now I want Dim Sum!

    1. I had a hard time believing it's been 49 days and recounted on the calendar.
