Weather Alert!

Oh no!

... UNSEASONABLY MILD AND LOCALLY WINDY FOR ANOTHER WEEK...
AN UNUSUAL WEATHER PATTERN FOR ALASKA IS VERY LIKELY TO CONTINUE THROUGH MID-OCTOBER... WITH A STORM TRACK ACROSS THE SOUTHERN BERING SEA AND THEN INTO WESTERN ALASKA. WHILE THE TRACKS OF INDIVIDUAL STORMS WILL BE WELL FORECAST ONLY SEVERAL DAYS IN ADVANCE... THE BASIC PATTERN WILL RESULT IN REGIONALLY HEAVY PRECIPITATION OVER THE COURSE OF THE NEXT WEEK... AND SIGNIFICANTLY ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES FOR NEARLY ALL OF ALASKA. THIS IS IN SHARP CONTRAST TO OCTOBER 2012... WHICH WAS UNUSUALLY COLD AND WITH BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION OVER THE EASTERN TWO THIRDS OF THE STATE.
FOR INTERIOR ALASKA... CONTINUED MILD TEMPERATURES ARE LIKELY TO PRECLUDE SIGNIFICANT LOW ELEVATION SNOWFALL FOR AT LEAST THE NEXT WEEK. THE AVERAGE DATE FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE PERMANENT WINTER SNOW COVER AT LOW ELEVATIONS IN THE INTERIOR IS GENERALLY OCTOBER 10 TO 20TH. OCCASIONAL STRONG CHINOOK WINDS WILL THROUGH ALASKA RANGE PASSES... AS HAS OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES IN THE PAST TEN DAYS.
THE PATTERN SETTING UP IS FOR STRONG HIGH PRESSURE ALOFT OFF THE COAST OF BRITISH COLUMBIA AND THE SOUTHERN GULF OF ALASKA AND LOW PRESSURE OF THE CENTRAL BERING SEA AND ALEUTIANS. THIS TYPE OF PATTERN MAY ALLOW ONE OR MORE STORMS TO TAP INTO HIGH MOISTURE CONTENT AIR FROM THE SUBTROPICAL PACIFIC REGION. THIS PATTERN IS EXPECTED TO PERSIST INTO NEXT WEEKEND.
Weird weather. I thought it was kind of odd that it hasn't snowed yet. I guess it is odd. We'll just have to put up with the unseasonably warm weather...

  1. You need a PhD in meteorology to read a weather forecast in Alaska. is unseasonably mild above freezing? I take it breezy weather is around hurricane strength?

    1. Unseasonably mild appears to be still above freezing at least here in Fairbanks. Breezy seems to vary with location. Around here, it's just a breeze. In Anchorage, it's 80 mph winds.

  2. Usually when one region of the US is getting "unusual" weather the same thing happens in an opposing region. I wonder if we should look for, say, FL or TX to get extreme weather this winter.

I have not heard a prediction for our winter yet.

    1. Maybe Key West will see some snow, it'll give Conchscooter another kind of excitement. I just thought it odd that warmer weather was listed under a severe weather advisory.

    2. And I think that's an excellent question for your local weather people. I think you should ask them.

    3. I'll see a NWS friend tomorrow. I'll be sure to ask.

  3. If it has to be unseasonable something, I am glad you are having unseasonably mild instead of the other direction. Enjoy.

    1. Unseasonably warm is fine especially since I'll be gone for a while. The bad part will be insufficient snow cover means the cold penetrates deeper into the ground freezing pipes and slowing the springtime thaw.

    2. I'm thinking there's still plenty of time for that snow??

    3. The concern around here is having enough snow to insulate the ground to minimize how deep the cold penetrates. We've had -30°F in October before and if there isn't some snow cover, pipes freeze.

  4. Unseasonable warm and mild, well the two-wheeled riders will have no excuse for some more "last ride of the season" events....it would be ironic if we get big snow before you do Richard....just saying.

    1. sigh, really have to check my verbiage before hitting enter....I meant to say: the two-wheeled riders will have no excuse to not have some more "last rides" of the season.

    2. Maybe it'll be the new norm. CO has already gotten some snow at the higher elevations, right? Around Fairbanks, the snow level is around 5000' so only the mountains.

    3. There is snow, at above 10,000 ft....not much though.

  5. Seriously? Well, more "last season rides" for you.
