In case you haven't guessed from the picture, I'm not in Fairbanks this week. This morning, I flew to Anaheim for the Educause conference at the Anaheim Convention Center across the street from Disneyland. I believe that this was the first time that I've ever flown into the Santa Ana airport though I have picked people up here. I haven't been to an Educause Conference in five years. Educause is a group focusing on information technology issues facing higher education.
The WiFi here at the hotel is miserably slow maybe due to all of the information technology types here for the conference clogging things up. The temperature here today was 84°F (29°C) so it's just a tad warmer than Fairbanks. We'll see if I survive. The cab ride from the airport convinced me again of why I left southern California. Way too many cars.
One of the benefits is more variety when going out to dinner. It was hard for me to pass up an opportunity to try out the Indian restaurant a couple of blocks away. The place was deserted but the food was pretty good. I only tried one lamb dish plus the garlic naan but if everything else was as flavorful, I'm wondering why the place was so empty. I'll be here the rest of the week then heading to Oregon on Friday afternoon for the next four days to visit family.
Things start up tomorrow at 7:00am. We'll see if the WiFi is any better at the convention center tomorrow.

Your cold and wet weather will be there when you get home. Stock up on warmth and good food! That Indian food does look good, too.
ReplyDeleteWe'll see if the warm weather lasts up there. I suspect that there are quite a few good food places around here.
DeleteYou guys sure pick "rough" locations to have these "meetings of the minds". :) Are you going to "Go to Disneyland"?
ReplyDeleteThey seem to move between Orlando, Anaheim and Denver (Educause's offices are located in Boulder). I don't plan to go to Disneyland though it is just right across the street from the convention center.
DeleteSounds like the weather is a nice treat for you even if the traffic isn't.
ReplyDeleteYou can come to Corvallis and cool off a smidge before heading home. No rain in the forecast just temps in the high 60's.
Fortunately, I didn't have to drive through the traffic. Three of us split a cab from the airport to the convention center area. But all of us were a different airports. It may be in the 80s outside but inside the meeting rooms, it must be in the 60s. I should have brought a jacket for inside the buildings.
DeleteI am planning on gong to coffee on Saturday but don't have anything else planned.
Looking forward to seeing you Saturday. Let us know if you want to do lunch or dinner somewhere.
DeleteAnd don't forget we have an extra bike and a lot of extra gear........ it is supposed to be 68 for the weekend and nothing but sunshine.

ReplyDeleteHaven't head Indian food for a while. They have several AYCE buffets here due to large population and we generally eat too much so avoid them. This weekend is AYCE Japanese.
We were in SFO traffic last January and stuck in gridlock. Makes you appreciate the Fairbanks rush hours.

I tend to avoid buffets (except for salad bars). We don't have any Indian food restaurants in Fairbanks so its always a treat.
DeleteGee I wish I could go to some of these lovely conference places! Enjoy the sun and warmth for winter is waiting.
ReplyDeleteI must admit that it's kind of pleasant around here but after growing up here, I generally don't look forward to returning. Too many people.
DeleteI completely forgot about the Santa Ana airport; we worked a couple of blocks from John Wayne when we were Orange Co residents. Our daughter is at USC and I like it better when she comes home rather than the other way around. :)
ReplyDeleteAccording to the signs, it looks like it goes by both names. Some say John Wayne others say Santa Ana. Whatever, it was a lot nicer than landing at LAX.
DeleteYou used to live here? 31 years ago, I left the area for Alaska.
