Afternoon in Nenana

Today, we spent much of the afternoon in Nenana, a small town abut 50 miles from Fairbanks on the Parks Highway. This is the train station which I don’t believe is actually in use anymore. The train still stops in Nenana but only to load/unload cruise passengers who aro on the non-cruise portion of their Alaska adventure. That is a guess based on seeing a couple of tour buses go by laden with people.

The second picture explains that the north-south section of the Alaska Railroad was completed near here. The train is actually a great trip and you don’t need to sign up for a cruise to take it.

  1. Cool history tidbit! If we make it back to Alaska, we will definitely take the trail to Nenana. Just a fun name to say. :)

  3. Nice to know about the train station. If we ever get back to Alaska, that would be fun. We did ride the Alaska Railroad from Seward to Anchorage during our last visit, which was lovely!

    1. I was surprised to read that the final spike was driven around here. For quite a while, there wasn't a road north-south and the railroad bridge was the only one crossing the Tanana River. A friend tells of riding his motorcycle across the bridge often. The Seward-Anchorage trip is definitely the best part of the train trip. I've taken the Whittier-Anchorage and the Fairbanks-Denali train trips.
