Quest for Spring - Savannah, GA

We had headed south looking for Spring and I believe that we may have found something close enough in Savannah, Georgia. By mid-morning, it has been above 60°F and sunny. That is shirt sleeve for us (unlike some others bundled up with gloves, scarfs and hats. I apologize for the number of pictures but we have been pretty busy. There were quite a few bikes running around Savannah, mostly groups of large, loud cruisers trailered in for the sunny weather.

First stop was the railroad museum in downtown Savannah behind the visitors center. There is quite a selection of engines but they are slowly being restored and not all of the run. We did take a short ride through the grounds pulled by the third one from the left. The power plant is the ornate building below.

The second stop was the museum next to the visitors center. This is a single cylinder, front-engine, rear chain drive buggy. It is a 1902 Crestmobile according to the sign. We walked around town during the afternoon then took a "Paula Deen" streetcar tour which ended with dinner at her restaurant The Lady and Sons.

The food was pretty tasty but probably pretty high calorie as well. To me. the best items were the collard greens, cabbage and the mac & cheese. The fried chicken had good flavor but was over cooked. The streets were really crowded since there was a 5K race taking place and many of the streets were blocked off. The picture below shows the green water in all of the fountains in preparation for St. Patricks day.

Today, while walking around Savannah, we passed a Vespa dealer which has a very familiar looking sidecar mounted to a Vespa. The one improvement is the trunk opening from the rear. Bridget spotted it in the garage before I did. After lunch, we headed towards the coast to Tybee Island. The first stop was the lighthouse.

It was 178 steps to the top of the lighthouse and the view was worth the climb. I took some pano shots but don't have the software with me to make them. the next photo is looking into the bulb and lens housing.

The next couple of shots are from Tybee pier located near our hotel. There was a St. Patricks Day parade going on so we really couldn't drive anywhere after making it to the hotel. The main street running through town and all of the side streets were blocked off for a few hours. it was a wonderful walk and, as you may notice, no snow and ice.

Just a shot of the sand between the dunes and the ocean. The next photo was taken from the top of the lighthouse. I'm too lazy to re-arrange all of the pictures in this post to get it in the right order. This is the view looking south towards town.

This is looking north from Tybee Pier. Not many people on the beach though there were a few hardy surfers out in the water.

Tomorrow, we start heading north again for Philadelphia for our flight on Wednesday.

    1. It's a beautiful area even if it we only got to spend a couple of days here. I've only been to Savannah once before and then I only passed through on my way to the Atlanta airport from Florida.

  2. Same here, never been there but it looks beautiful, almost like summer... Well spotted Vespa. Like the blue sidecar but, love the orange scooter further back.

    1. It really does almost feel like summer. We've been told that this is one of the best times of the year to visit as the weather is very pleasant. No humidity and mild temperatures.

There were a lot of Vespas in that garage but only one sidecar. There were a lot of scooters running around. Parking is horrible in the historic district which seems like a great reason for a scooter

  3. I love that Vespa dealer photo. So colorful! Yes, it's been awhile since I've seen color...

And you certainly got some South in your mouth! It looks like you had a wonderful visit.

    1. The Vespas at the dealer looked very colorful with the sunny weather. They had some 49cc scooters available for rent but we were heading towards the coast after lunch.

Lots of regional food this trip...

  4. Beautiful sunshiny weather Richard. I am glad you found some warm temperatures.

I always enjoy pictures of places I've never been so this was particularly interesting. I especially enjoyed the lighthouse pics.

The food from Paula Deen's restaurant looks 'rich', like it would be hard to eat much of it.

    1. This really is a nice area at this time of year. The weather at the beach was comfortable when the sun was out. It hit 70°F today on our drive north to Fayetteville, NC.

    1. Your visit is what gave us the idea to try and visit Savannah.

  6. 70 degree temps - Ideal. Hopefully the 178 steps to the top of the lighthouse helped to counter act eating the Paula Deen way.

    1. I think it would take a lot more than 178 steps to counter the Paula Deen restaurant. But there were some great selection of dishes. Not everything was made of butter...

  7. Richard,
I think the Vespa with a sidecar is a Genuine Stella. Nice catch either way.

Never been to the deep South. I haven't even been in the airport for which I'm grateful.

Savannah sounds lovely and interesting. Thanks for the share.

    1. I didn't look at the scooter at all. Just the differences in the sidecar. And just assumed Vespa since that is the only make listed on their sign.

I'd recommend Savannah to anyone looking for a vacation location.

  8. Good to see you could get some spring feeling, in the sand and the sea. Love the lighthouse. Did you visit the fort too? I'm glad the weather was good, and you could enjoy some of the St. Patricks festivities. I've heard they last for quite awhile. ;)

    1. Just a little taste of Spring. We are now headed back north. The whole St. Patrick's day thing kind of blew me away. Huge parades and I hear it almost shuts the town down with so many visitors...

You live in a beautiful state. I wish we had more time.
