Up the Elliot Hwy to Globe Creek

On Friday afternoon, I went to Globe Creek Camp which is located on the Elliot Highway north of Fairbanks. It was 33°F and sleeting when going over Wickersham Dome but otherwise, a nice ride. I did opt to dig out the heated liner and gloves for the first time. I'm still using the old First Gear riding gear but have received a tracking number from Aerostich. I'm looking forward to getting the Roadcrafter Light back. This is the first snow of the year for me.

I did attach the GoPro to the sidecar and filmed a time-lapse. I couldn't figure out any good places to stop for a picture on the way out as the weather was overcast and foggy. The lens ended up getting covered with snow on the trip out so here is the footage from the return trip. I left when the temperature started to drop again. The Ural started easily and I even used the kick starter partly to make sure I reassembled it properly a few weeks back.

    1. No, I haven’t even tried to take aurora photos in 35 years. Need a much better camera than anything I have. I hear the newer GoPro cameras have a night time-lapse mode that works pretty good.

  2. Brrr. The Ural looks chilly all frosted up. Glad you dug out the heated gear and have a tracking number for the Stich too. Brad has ridden to work the last two mornings, but he has been lucky it has been 48 degrees.

  3. Looks a bit like Florida (after Irma all brown) and flat and straight. Surprised.

    1. This is kinda the dreary season. No longer colorful. Just grey and brown. Once it starts to snow things look "brighter".

  4. Don't want to think about the temperature getting to the freezing point here. Watching the video I felt cold. Not ready for winter.

I've often considered a Roadcrafter suit but keep falling back to my First Gear jacket and pants and lots of layers. The jacket is relatively new and works well.

Are there back roads in Alaska? Or is everything like a main road? Pennsylvania has 250K miles of lane roads where Alaska only has 31K.

When I look at your videos I always think I should make something like that. Love the timelapse approach.

    1. Not cold at all. At this time, I was using my old First Gear jacket and pants with a heated liner and gloves. Nice and toasty and mostly dry. The stuff still works great and still gets a lot of use.

If by back roads you mean gravel, then yes. But they generally don't connect to other roads. Most of the main roads in AK are just 2 lanes unless you are around south central (Anchorage). And there are "main roads" that are still gravel.

I still have difficulty with video. This was one frame every 5 seconds or about 24 sec of video per hour (I think)

  5. Richard, good to see you've got the Ural on the road again. Enjoyed reading the repair report.

    1. I'm glad that it was so easy to work on the transmission. I've been enjoying the pictures of your east coast adventure.

  6. Not ready for winter (32F) here either. Even with the sidecar, I'll never be able to ride like you do.

Enjoyed the video, will have to give that a try.

    1. With the sidecar it's much harder to fall over. It takes some effort...

  7. I am trying hard to catch up on my blog reading (again). Snow on Oct 1st, wow. We are currently in Chattanooga for a week helping work on a house with Jerry's son, and the lows are in the 20s this weekend. We'll see how the RV handles cold weather, I guess :-O
