Non-Facebook Psychopath

Another week of just commuting and no entertaining rides at all. I have been somewhat focused on getting ready for the Equinox Marathon next month by trying to walk whenever the opportunity presents itself. I should probably be walking to/from work instead of riding but anytime I go out to the garage, I just want to jump on the bike and go somewhere... anywhere. This morning brought a few showers and these wonderful rainbows showed up shortly after I went across the street for coffee.

It appears that some of the trees are anxious for Fall and Winter to arrive and are working hard to shed some leaves. There are patches of yellow showing up all over the hills. Our morning temperatures have warmed up to the high 40's (°F) and a couple of times our highs have ventured into the low 80's.

On another note. There has been a lot of discussion lately on a couple of articles written about those that refuse to turn their life over to Facebook. According to Forbes, I probably am a psychopath (i.e. non-Facebook user). They explain how potential employers now "wonder" about someone who doesn't have a digital life and how mass murderers usually aren't on Facebook. Apparantly, not having an account makes you "suspicious"...

I am in the same Non-Facebook club. I have lost lots of contacts because of this but I refuse to join. I know I am not alone, and I know many have told me they got fed up and closed their FB accounts. I notice that lots of Companies have jumped onto the FB bandwagon but I guess I will never get their "deals" or discounts

You can walk anytime, all year long in any weather. You can not ride all year so it is right that you ride instead of walk if the opportunity presents itself. Don't feel guilty . . .

I don't have to worry about potential employers as I hope this is my last job. I'm also thinking about my last car, and my last bike. We had to go to a wedding last week and Mrs Skoot wanted me to have some new ties, so naturally I think those are my Last Ties.

    1. As a serious photographer, I would have been surprised if you were a FB user given their terms of service.

You sound pretty pessimistic talking about your "Last" things. Retirement is all about a beginnings isn't it?

  2. Beautiful header pic Richard and I really like the rainbow too.

I don't think not having a facebook account makes you psycho - it probably keeps you sane.

    1. Thank you, I was surprised the rainbow hung around for as long as it did.

Actually, I do have an account that I use to authenticate to other services when their only option is FB. Just no friends and no posts...

  3. I'm with you Richard, I don't facebook (though I have an account, I don't post nor do I accept friends). I think I would be more suspicious of the face book folks who hold the worlds data in their hands than of those of us who prefer to chat face to real face.
And great header photo ... where did you take it?

    1. Reading their terms of service should convince just about anyone that they are evil, maybe Google as well....

The header photo was taken at the eastern end of Kluane Lake in the Yukon Territory just a short way from the Alaska border. It is a beautiful glacial fed lake with the mountains practically coming right down to the shore in places.

  4. Brilliant rainbow. Nice catch.

I guess that the government has a record of all non-facebook people to narrow down the suspects in case of mass murder or home grown terrorism. (I am safe, I have an account, although I barely use it...)

    1. I sometimes wonder about those that are so obsessed with FB that they have it open all the time.

  5. I've had the same kind of week. Commuting but not much joy-riding. I'm also craving more time on the ninja.

We need to get out and start walking again. Right now it's too hot in the evenings. Hopefully the heatwave goes away after this weekend. (yeah, I could walk in the morning, but I'm just not a morning person!)

I love the rainbow photo - beautiful scene.

I have a FB account, but I'm not very active on it.

    1. But at least you have a nice commute through rural areas of OR. I heard that it has been approaching 100°F in Corvallis. I guess summer has finally arrived...

  6. Beautiful rainbow.

I was disheartened to learn that might be the case with FB non-users. It is so interesting how fast some technology works it's way into the mind and mainstream of life. Like everyone else, I have an account, but rarely use it. And I have thought about closing it.

However, what I think some people might not be realizing,..who needs the FB account...we have blogs...and some of us do put some of the same crazy pictures and thoughts on our blogs. They are just a fraction more difficult to find than FB profiles. ;)

    1. The whole blog thing came to mind. One blogger called it her anti-Facebook blog. Still a social presence but you aren't surrendering everything (such as copyright to posted photos or written text) to FB.

  7. Beautiful rainbow photo! How lovely to see that!

FB schmacebook. Who cares. And any employer who thinks that is the psychopath. Besides, FB stock took a dive and they are just trying to rescue it in any way possible.

    1. Sounds plausible. I did read that that their stock isn't doing anywhere near as well as they had expected. I think the only ones who benefited were the executives (and probably the lawyers).

  8. I saw your note at Martha's and came over to visit. I follow a couple of Alaskans - one who supplies ships in Dutch Harbor, and one who's a physic major at UA Fairbanks and one of the best tropical weather forecasters I know. (Home schooled, and shows it.)

Oh, Facebook. There's a rule worth remembering - if you get it free on the net, you're the product, not the customer.
I joined and then left FB for every sort of good reason, including the amount of time it sucked up and the lack of privacy controls. Shortly after, I threw out the television and went back to a dumb phone that makes phone calls. I'm no Luddite, but I prefer tools over toys.

Psychopathic? That's just silly. Someone had a deadline and no good ideas.

Nice blog. I'll look forward to poking around a bit.

    1. Thank you for stopping by and commenting. Physics, eh? The reason I ended up in Alaska thirty years ago. I like the picture in your "About Me" section as I used to sail out of Newport when I was in college...
