North Wisconsin

Friday - This morning we did some exploring with RV friends Kevin and Charla. The first stop was to get some blueberries at a u-pick farm. Huge berries compared to Alaska wild blueberries but still tasty. We didn’t pick a lot. Just enough for dessert and to add to cereal.

Our next stop was the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. I had stopped by here yesterday on the way back from Ashland when I had the RV oil changed. It has a lot of displays and a large cupola with nice views. Or nice views if it wasn’t for all the smoke from the Canadian fires.

There were some nice murals in the stairwell up to the cupola. A very nice visitor center. There were a number of movies and I watch one on the Edmund Fitzgerald. It was a large ore ship that was one of the 6,000 ships that sunk in Lake Superior. I hadn’t realized that it sunk in 1975. For some reason I thought it was mid-century.

Saturday
 - We began at the Meteor, the last whaleback ship in the world. It is a freighter that sat low in the water with a rounded hull and designed for low drag. This is the only surviving ship of that design and the design limits the maximum size.

It was driven by the steam engine originally powered by coal then oil. This ship was built in 1896 and was in service until 1969 when it ran aground in MI. Volunteers raised money to have the ship moved to its current location near where it was built.

After lunch, we went on the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad. A 2 hour out and back trip along the St. Louis River. There were three cars pulled by a small diesel locomotive and completely run by volunteers. It was a nice, relaxing ride with a lot of local history.

This is the Oliver Bridge, with the train on the upper level and cars below. This was near the southern end of the train trip. A train just happened to be on the bridge when we passed.
