Winter's Here!

After a very moderate October, we are finally starting to get the "dry cold" that many prefer. I heard many comments like "It's about time we got some decent weather" this morning at the coffee place. It's not that everyone likes the cold but many people, me included, don't care for the wet snow that we have been getting the last couple of storms.

There was a temperature inversion this morning as it was only about 0°F at our home but much colder as you headed toward town and lower elevations. Today was one of those days when I should have worn a fleece liner over the heated liner as I was feeling the cold on my chest by the time I got home. A lot of air gets by the Ural windshield. I had other errands to run this morning that needed the truck so I dropped the plow in front of the garage and headed to get groceries... lots of groceries. Tomorrow evening and Saturday morning I will be preparing snacks and breakfast for around 150 people. Hopefully I guessed right on the quantities.

About an hour after my last post where I mentioned that I had just received an email from Aerostitch with a tracking number, FedEx dropped a box off at our door. Pretty speedy shipping, eh? The reality is that they had mentioned last week that it should be shipped by the end of the week. For all of the good things about Aerostitch, communication doesn't seem to be one of their strengths.

  1. Wet snow is no fun, glad you got the aerostich back in time for the crisp snow!

    1. Wet snow isn't good for much except maybe building snow creations.

  2. When I stationed there in the Air Force I liked it from 10 to 20 below best in the winter. Didn't care much for the -48 degrees for 2 straight weeks we had a few times in my two winter there. -65 was the coldest and that was brutal.

    1. Thank you for stopping by and commenting! I like it from about +10°F to -20°F. Above that it's too wet and slippery and below that it just feels cold...

  3. That's odd that Aerostich didn't keep you updated and email sooner; they really impressed me with their communication, so much so that I considered it to be one of their strong points. Glad you got your suit repaired and in time for winter.

    1. The only way to find anything out was if I sent them an email or asked for an update on their online service system. They did mention that that there was some burns from the muffler and asked if I wanted it patched. I called and said yes, gave them a CC number for the repair but it wasn't done. And this is the second time the back pad velcro has had to be replaced. When it comes loose again, it'll probably just be sewn on and seam sealed...

  4. Richard, as much as I like the look of that first picture, I still don't like the cold...

    1. It was kinda cold but not too cold to ride around. I still really enjoy riding around even if only around town...

  5. I think you've had winter up there for a while now.
It started snowing here on Thursday afternoon, by this morning we had 3 inches on the front steps. Good news is they predict 50's on Sunday!

    1. This is the first cold spell. We've had plenty of snow but it was always on the warm side. It would've been odd not to see -30°F by Thanksgiving.

  6. Richard,
All of the above comments aside, I can't get too excited about dry cold. Wet cold still = warmer and if I can personally stay dry, that's what gets my vote. I do understand though. Our sort-of annual "January Thaw" is something we mostly look forward to as a break from day after day cold.

    1. I still prefer the dry cold as the roads clear up and traction is almost as good as in the summer. And with heated gear, it's just about as comfortable. Helmet visor fogging is still a problem though.

  7. I'm sitting in our breezeway and it's 50F. My fingers lack color but I want to go for a ride. Reading about winter coming your way in Alaska isn't helping. Please post more often about toasty fires, being too hot, the sun is a problem shining in your eyes -- that sort of thing. It will be immensely helpful in getting my off my ass and into motion.

    Warmest regards,

    steve
