Snowy Morning RIde

Another couple of inches of snow last night and it's still coming down. It's very quiet outdoors on days like this and once you are even a little ways from the main roads, you can't even hear any traffic. This is on the gravel road on the north side of the university where walking/ski trail crosses the road. It's a very pleasant 27ºF but the forecast for a week from now is -15ºF. We usually have our first cold spell before the U.S. Thanksgiving holidays so i't right on schedule.

It was such a plesant day that I took off on my favorite loop through the next valley north (Goldstream Valley) before cutting back towards town on the Old Steese and Skyridge Dr. I guess I could've stopped but didn't really see anything "photo worthy". We just don't have the majestic mountain views here in Fairbanks. The fresh snow was making some sections of road a little slick but not unmanageable. The only time 2WD was needed was on the subdivision road and that was only because someone was behind me. They may not appreciate wheelspin (gravel on their windshield). I know that I wouldn't. Since the final drive was replaced at Raceway, it is really easy to switch in/out of 2WD. Not at all like it was last year.

    1. Still not very much snow... Barely enough to cover the "stuff" (aka junk) in some yards...

  2. Although winter is not my favourite time of the year I also like the silence and the clean and tidy look that comes with the white cover.

    1. I really like the fresh, clean look after a snowfall. Even more so when there is frost on the trees. Kind of like in the Dr. Zhivago movie.

  3. Nothing mutes a landscape like a snowstorm. Such silence is one of my favorite parts of snowshoeing.

This week we had rain in the valley, and at the higher elevations (in the Wasatch), snow. It looks like we might be in for it again next week. Here's to hoping it's the start of a winter better than the last one.

    1. I enjoy x-country skiing for the same reason. Snow shoes seemed like a lot more work...

  4. I always thought the quiet was the best thing about a snowfall. When we lived in Penticton we used to go out for walks in the snow, it was pretty and peaceful.

    1. One of the best aspects of winter. Also, fewer tour busses and RVs!

  5. El Nino is messing with us here in Eastern Ontario so it's still a bit noisy (more motorcycles the last week than all of October.) One little freak snow blast back in October and then the temps rose to near summer. It's been great for people like me who procrastinate ... many pre winter chores done now, except for the winter tires!

    1. Near summertime time temperatures in November. Who would've thought. Maybe the bike got put away a little early this year...
