I don't see too many animals whenever I'm here in Barrow. Maybe it's because I don't spend enough time outside. Today, there were some caribou about a mile or so from the BARC and this was the best that I could do with my 200mm lens and cropping out all except the center of the image. Looking in the direction of the sun really seemed to wash things out.
Just for comparison, this is looking in the opposite direction away from the sun. The yellow building is the old power plant from when this site was used as a navy lab (Naval Arctic Research Lab - NARL). It isn't a power plant anymore but I'm not sure who's using the building. Behind that is a building supply store.
What fantastic light. Wonder what the skin cancer rates are in AK.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the CDC website, the skin melanoma rate for Alaska is 16.1/100,000 in 2010. This evening, it ended up being really bright and completely cloud free.
DeleteSo, were you in short sleeves and shorts? ;)
ReplyDeleteNo, it barely got above 0°F and windy. Wind chill was around -18°F in the middle of the afternoon and it felt like it.
DeleteReally pretty and bright! Still too cold for me though ;)
ReplyDeleteEverywhere seems really bright. I think it may be the reflection from the snow added to the 13+ hours of sun.
DeleteSunshine does something for the psyche that warm temps and grey skies cannot do. Wear your sunscreen.
ReplyDeleteSunscreen? What's that…
DeleteThe bright long days are beginning.
All that sunshine and white snow is blinding to the camera, but pretty. Nice you saw the caribou though.
ReplyDeleteIt was the first time that I've seen caribou in the Barrow area.
