Back when I started this blog, I would have never thought that I'd ever reach 900 posts. It was initially started as part of a university fitness program where I would just post about where I had walked and it just sort of evolved from there. The blog was originally on a university server but I switched to Blogger after the first couple of years (and a few hundred lost posts). Thank you to those that read and especially those who comment.

The cold weather usually brings some interesting effects. This is from the temperature inversion and it looks kind of cool. What you are looking at is the base of two hills being reflected up. You can't see the top of the hills.

A colleague mentioned that he was watching an Alaska Air flight descending through the inversion and it looked like the plane elongated before appearing normal upon landing. Here is another shot later in the day showing the two hills. If you compare this with the view of the same two hills in the header photo, you can see how far away they really are.

It was -24°F this morning and the weather guessers are claiming that we will be down to almost -40°F by mid week. So probably not much riding this week...

Tuesday Morning Update - Surprise! It was only -11°F this morning so I was able to ride this morning. I even found a "Motorcycle Only" parking space. Of course, everyone else parks there all the time during the Winter but due to the temperature, they don't leave their cars there overnight.

  1. Congratulations on Post 900 Richard!

I was just telling someone about you riding at -18, without plugging in your gear, and saying it wasn't that bad. I will happily go back and report you quit riding somewhere between -24 and -40!

    You Sir, are the man!!

    1. I'm not very happy about not walking anymore. I used to be able to count on 500 to a thousand Calories per day just from the walking. Not walking as much probably can account for the slow weight gain over the last year even with no change in diet.

I just stopped blogging about the walks. Pretty boring stuff but we also did some "geocaching" type of things where we hid caches of poker chips. If you collect enough different ones, you could turn them in for some sort of prize.

    1. If you look at my early posts there wasn't much more than a couple of sentences. Pictures came even later.

  4. A sushi roll with 900 candles for you! And you keep on walking! Motorcycles have their place, but the body was meant to move. And then there's the silence of walking...but you know all of this.

And continued congrats on your health program!

    1. Sushi roll, thank you! (Too many carbs for me to really enjoy) I do walk but not as obsessively as before. It was the only real exercise that it was able to do. That was just after being diagnosed as type 2 and could barely walk a mile at a time. So I started to walk everywhere. I think the peak was over 3000 miles in one year.

    1. Lots of clouds. It was really flat and I had to really boost the contrast, sharpness and turned up the brilliance a bit. But thank you!

    1. Thank you, it looked kind of cool and that was the limit of my telephoto. 300mm (35mm equivalent) and hand held. But it was a beautiful day.

  7. Richard 900 posts is a lot of information shared with the world. I can't imagine a world without blogs and bloggers. What an amazing source of passionate prose and deep expertise.

I remember first reading about blogging. I looked at the blog cited as an example. The blogger was a suburban soccer mom in Three Rivers Quebec, of all places. There were accounts of family gatherings, and craft projects and recipes. I remember wondering why anyone could be bothered to post all that personal information, and why anyone would bother reading.

That was then, this is now, and I find myself a blogger as well.

    Now I understand.

Nice going on the diet too!! I've got my work cut out for me.

    1. I understand completely. When I first started, it was at the prompting of our benefits and HR department since I was viewed as tech literate. Back then, it wasn't as easy as it is now.

Once people start commenting, it becomes almost addictive. And once I've started meeting others, it became a great way to communicate.

The diet is going well, down 20# so far without a whole lot of effort. I should've made the dietary change a long time ago.

  9. Great job Richard. I am always amazed at how often you post and how it is always a good read. I am not that good at posting especially lately.

As long as you keep blogging, we'll keep reading.

    1. I must admit that I think I posted too often last weekend. I think that was subconsciencely driven by seeing that #900 was imminent. So sorry about all of the posts.

  10. Richard - 21 lbs and 900 posts both notable milestones (that put 30 pounds and 1000 posts within reach!) Well done - Congrats on both accounts.
Walking and blogging, they balance each other nicely.

    1. Thank you! Yes, walking and blogging do go well together especially if you compose new posts while walking. And even decide ahead of time what type of photos to include. Though I must admit that I don't plan very well and not that obsessed about walking anymore either. I think the marathons have burned me out...

  11. I don't think you can post too often. Sometimes I have 0 clue what you are talking about, but I read it anyway. :^)
