Corvallis, OR - Visiting Friends and Family

After five days in San Francisco attending the Fall AGU Meeting in Moscone Center, I was feeling pretty burnt out. I headed for the airport on BART and boarded the wrong train. I wasn't really paying attention to anything until I noticed that we were zipping past the airport. It was a simple matter of turning around at the next stop then switching trains again at the next stop. There were about a dozen of us out-of-towners going through this exercise and it probably added fifteen minutes to the trip. I flew up to Portland, rented a car and headed down to Corvallis to visit family for a couple of days. Since I had met Troubadour, Trobairitz and thier riding group before, I knew where they would be on Saturday morning. It was wonderful to visit with them again their very entertaining friends as well. They made me immediately feel welcome and part of the group.

After morning coffee, I drove my mom to the Willamette National Cemetery east of Portland to visit my fathers grave as she hadn't been there since the engraved stone was put in place. It was a wet, sloppy day and the muddy slopes were pretty slick but we had no trouble finding the site. Afterwards, we had lunch and did some Christmas shopping on the way back to Corvallis. This afternoon was spent at the Corvallis Youth Symphony concert where my nephew had his last concert with the group. It was a wonderful concert of classical works with not only the symphony but three youth choirs as well. After the concert, we had a wonderful dinner at Sada Sushi & Izakawa in Corvallis. Instead of being a simple sushi bar, they had a lot of other small dishes such as roasted yellowtail collar and salt roasted mackerel in addition to the standard sushi offerings and noodles. No pictures...

  2. You know you are always welcome Richard. I think our Saturday morning group likes visitors too, a whole new audience for their stories.

Thanks for taking the time to visit while you were here.

    1. I'm more than happy to play the part of an appreciative audience. I'm amazed that some of them actually remember me...

And it was wonderful to see you both again. But didn't get much of an opportunity to visit.

  3. Richard:

I like Saturday morning coffees, but this was too far for me this time of year.

When we were in SFO last year, we also took the BART. It only took a stop or two before we realized from the BART map we were getting farther away, especially with that terminal Loop.

Glad to see we were not the only stupid ones

    1. Just a quick 8 hour zip from Vancouver (plus a couple more hours at the border) especially on the new bike.

I wasn't really paying attention and got on the red train instead of the orange train. Plus there are no labels inside of the car and it seems that all transit drivers mumble over the speaker as if they didn't want anyone to understand what they are saying.
Fortunately, at SFO. there is only one BART train leaving the airport and it stops at the downtown stops so I got used to not paying attention since I assumed that anything going south was going to end up at the airport. I was wrong....

    2. Richard:

Little be known that my Uncle used to live in Corvallis a long time ago, but we never visited him. I often wonder where he lived . I should try to find the address and do a "drive by" one day

    3. "Drive by"? I would expect at least a couple of blog posts about the event...

Before my sister and brother- in-law moved there, the only thing I knew about Corvallis was that the old HP calculators were made there in the early 1970's. (I had an HP 65, HP 25 & still have an HP 32C)

  5. Richard, we've lots in common.....a recently engraved father's headstone, dear relatives immersed in Classical music and mutual friends in Corvallis. I like it when the big world shrinks for just a bit.
