Snow Video

Mid-morning on Tuesday, we started to get some large snowflakes. It seemed like a good time for another short video and I needed to pick up an air filter for the Ural. The last couple of days, the idle speed would be lower than usual after the engine warms up. And the exhaust smelled like it was running really rich.

This is just a short video of the ride with the large snowflakes. The doubled the speed of the video to shorten it. Riding in the falling snow is really relaxing. The fresh snow dampens sounds including the sound of the engine and exhaust. I'm not using the GoPro recorded audio due to clicking from something loose on the camera mount. It was gone for a while but now it's back again.

Wednesday morning - Things are getting back to normal here as far as weather is concerned. 10°F this morning which meant that the heated liner was used again.

ChrisL from everydayriding.org had mentioned that he has been using a Napa 2373 air filter in his Ural so I picked one up at the local Napa store and installed it yesterday evening. There was a lot of oil on the air cleaner housing including near the air intake so I suspect that the filter had picked up some oil and when it was snowing, it would clog.

  1. I always used to enjoy driving in the fresh snow as it was falling. I still like it, actually. Warm inside the car.

    1. Falling snow at night is my favorite. Kind of feels like the opening sequence in Star Trek....

    2. OH I KNOW! That's exactly what I am always thinking!!! Hit the brights and it's dangerously hypnotic!

  2. So, did the new air filter do the trick? Riding in snow and shooting gopro video, I've found the lens get wet or covered pretty quickly or you have to keep wiping it.....still, nice video.

    1. The jury is still out on whether it did the trick since the low idle was kind of intermittent. It needed the right conditions for the problem to surface.

Last night, I found my bottle of Rain-X and treated the lens covers on the housing with the stuff. It works great on windshields shedding water so I was curious if it'll work with snow. In the future, I'll probably reach over at every stop and wipe off the lens with my glove.

  3. I like the effect of the falling snow. I enjoy a walk as the snow is falling. Not much chance of that here, but I am okay with that.... for the most part.

    1. Walking, skiing or riding in falling snow is really nice, especially the silence that accompanies it. And as long as you are dressed for the weather, it's pleasant.

  4. Me too, I like driving (not riding...) in the snow. The warp effect in the dark has a mesmerising effect on me.

    1. With three wheels, it's almost the same as two and four. You still feel, hear and smell the landscape without having to worry too much about slipping on the snow and ice. I think it's a great compromise.
