Singapore Botanic Gardens

This morning was spent at the Singapore Botanic Gardens and the National Orchid Garden within the Botanic Gardens. The day began hot and muggy and by mid-afternoon, it was pouring rain. In fact it hailed on the north side of the island and this is 1° north of the equator. Weird weather. Here are a sampling of pictures from the Botanic Gardens.

In the evening, we went back down to the Esplanade as Bridget needed to attend a concert. A couple of students gave a free, brief concert singing songs from shows. I thought that they were both fabulous. Afterwards, my brother inlaw and I decided to walk back to the apartment along the channel instead of taking the bus. This is the view from the Esplanade.

The Marina Sands Casino put on a laser light show and we hung around to watch it. Since we weren't at the hotel/casino, we didn't hear the sound track but it was a pretty good show. All along the channel were bars and clubs and lots of loud, thumping music. It was still a nice walk.

This is just a shot from the balcony of the hotel. I find the design of the top of the neighboring building kind of interesting.

  1. Those tropical flowers look lovely. Did they have much smell? I wonder with the muggy weather whether the perfume of the flowers would seem stronger.

The tops of those neighboring buildings almost looks like a metal pattern. Interesting.

    1. Not much fragrance from most of the flowers and I don't know how much the muggy weather had to do with it. Many of the orchids had exposed roots and were using trees only for physical support. They got their moisture directly from the humid air.

The metal pattern on the neighboring building is used to hide the mechanical systems, i.e. air conditioning, elevator shafts, etc.

  2. There's no shortage of exquisite flowers in that part of the world. Lovely orchids.

    1. Phenomenal number and there are new strains being developed on a regular basis. There was a garden where new orchids were named after celebrities and others.

    1. Pretty nice display. There was a whole area of the harbor blocked off for a fire works barge but I don't know how often that show occurred.

  5. the night scenery and lighting is pretty cool, not much of a botanical kind of guy but the flowers seemed nice.

I think the walk instead of bus idea was great....

    1. Not much for flowers, eh.

The walk was very nice. I think that I'm actually getting more used to the heat and humidity. Maybe. The channel walkway was a nice option as there was a cool breeze.

    1. Thanks, I wasn't too sure how they would come out and ended up experimenting a lot with shutter speed and ISO. Plus a tripod would have been a good idea...
