Just when you thought that it was Spring then Bam! It was a slippery ride in this morning since I had removed the studs from the tires. I guess the state isn't confident since they changed the last day for studded tires for the second time. Usually, it's April 15th and they had already moved it to May 1st. Now it's May 15th. Needless to say, this weather is a little unusual.
I don't think that this is the weather that Dom had wanted to see but since he's waiting for parts, the weather probably doesn't matter much as long as it clears up later in the week. Some folks here at the University mentioned that the road was pretty treacherous coming in from North Pole and Chena Hot Springs. Probably since folks had gotten used to clear roads and were driving a bit too aggressively.
This morning after a couple of audioconferences, I went down to College Coffeehouse to meet with a couple of other riders and Dom. Talked sidecars with George almost the entire time. It's pretty wet out now but not very slippery at all anymore. This is one of those times when reverse sure would've been nice to have as I needed to pull the bike in using the rear rack on the sidecar through the snow.
Yep, not exactly optimal travel weather but not bad. I hasten to add that my URAL had no slippage when it exited the same driveway that your rig used....and this is without 2WD engaged. All that extra weight in the sidecar helps! ;)
ReplyDeleteToday was a bit worse. I may have to re-stud the tire again. Lots of slipping this morning.
DeleteThe winter still has some opinion of its own in your neck of the woods. Reporting sunshine and blue skies from the wet coast, having a wonderful mountain view while waiting at the airport for boarding to London.
ReplyDeleteIt cleared up a little bit in the afternoon but started to snow again at night. They are predicting about 4" of accumulation. But the roads are just slushy by the afternoon.
DeleteI'm confused. I would think this was normal weather for you.
ReplyDeleteFor this time of year, it's a bit unusual but not unheard of. It's generally warmer and not snowing anymore except at higher elevations.
DeleteWe have cold returning and snow possible the next few days too.
ReplyDeleteSounds grim and after all of your snow was gone. We haven't reached the "no snow" state yet.
DeleteRichard:
ReplyDeleteDon't look at me ! We are getting warmer by the day. This coming weekend is forecast to be beautiful and warm.
BUT just outside of the Fraser Valley, our Coquihalla highway had blizzard conditions and the highway was closed due to too much snow and many accidents

Riding the Wet Coast
If it's warm and nice there, then it's probably wet up here. The Coquihalla Hwy is kind of high (elevation wise) isn't it? I remember that it was a beautiful area.
DeleteThink of all those upper body muscles you are building up pulling the sidecar rig through the snow......
ReplyDeleteDrag, drag, steer, steer. The steering with the side car is supposed to be a pretty good workout. I just need some longer trips...
DeleteWow! You and Eric getting snow again. Oh well. Makes spring that much more sweet.
ReplyDeleteI'm told that folks around here start planting their gardens on about May 10th. Not sure that's going to happen this year, It just started to snow again this morning....
DeleteRichard - it may turn around any minute. Two weeks ago (tomorrow) we were under a winter storm warning with freezing rain and snow - today, I required the air con in the vehicle on the way home. My friends are all asking, "Have you got the bike out yet?" and I have to answer ... "I've got standards, the snow tires have to be off the SUV for at least 2 weeks before I get the bike out." - got the snows off on Tuesday. There is hope.
