Take a look at the text for today's high temperature. I thought that it was pretty warm today...
A while back, there was a request for a video of Fairbanks proper. I had an appointment at the clinic and since it borders on the downtown area, it was an opportunity to make a video. I start from the university and head down College Rd towards REI which is just northeast of the downtown area. The initial part of the video is at 4x speed since that part is a repeat of what I had posted in earlier videos. I then sort of travel around and through the downtown area including 2nd Ave which had quite a sleazy reputation back in the pipeline days. These days, I find that there is little reason to ever go downtown. I don't find it a pleasant place to visit. I'm not sure what tourists and visitors think when they visit Fairbanks.

Our downtown is very pretty, but I never go there because it's so crowded and I just skirt around it from now until November.
ReplyDeleteThere are events that attract a lot of people to downtown but it just doesn't feel like a place I want to hang around. Not very pretty either like Victoria. But then again, many cities feel that way to me...
DeleteWe visited Fairbanks back in summer 2004 during the big forest fires. All I remember is reddish smoky air, and that we watched a double feature at the local cinema in order to get some fresh and smoke free environment. At that time many roads were off limits and we turned south ending up visiting Northern BC instead of exploring Alaska.
ReplyDeleteBack then we had a travel trailer with air conditioning. We spent a lot of time in there as it was too hot in the house with the windows closed due to the smoke.
DeleteOh dear lord we have more %€£#€!!! snow than Alaska!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's snowing today so we, obviously, want to help you feel better...
DeleteNow that our snow is finally gone (again) I at least wasn't afraid to watch.
ReplyDeleteSee, if you had the sidecar rig you'd be looking forward to snow (some, not a lot!)
DeleteWhat David said. Oh well, gives me some time to do necessary maintenance before the season begins. Should have been done by now, but.....
ReplyDeleteThere have been bikes out on the road now for about a week though todays snowfall probably put a stop to that.
DeleteThe only building I remembered was the Wells Fargo Bank building when you took me to that hardware store downtown.
ReplyDeleteJust think, it's almost two years now since I showed up at your doorstep.....and started homesteading. :)
It doesn't seem like it's been that long. And you are welcome at any time...
DeleteRichard ... we are finally and quickly, this week, catching up to how little snow you have! Tuesday we had a blizzard with snowflakes as big as snowballs and today +14C. Tons of bikes on the road today.
ReplyDeleteMy downtown is beautiful - but I don't go 'cause they want me to pay (lots) for parking. Why would I? I've already seen it!
Almost everywhere in Fairbanks downtown is pay-parking as well. The exceptions are the store parking lots. Plus, I can park at the university building downtown but it's not near anywhere I want to go...
