Surprise, actually a post with a little bit of moto content.
I didn't plan on submitting any videos to the Polar Bear Challenge this year but today was nice and warm and I had found the GoPro charging cable. It took only a few minutes to attach the monopod to the cargo rack and run the cables to the USB port in the sidecar. I had to search for the remote but eventually had it attached to the windshield strut. The Polar Bear Challenge only requires three video submissions, only one video per day, that has at least three minutes of riding with a starting temperature of 32°F or lower. Pretty minimal requirements.
Here is the first video.

'tis the season... for the PBC. Look like real winter to me, Richard, good luck with the challenge.
ReplyDeleteNot really a challenge as I decided not to "compete" but simply participate. Last year, it was taking too much time to collect and process the video simple as it is...
DeleteHOORAY!!! I enjoy the PBC when it is you doing the riding and am happy to ride along. Have you discovered how long you HAVE to ride to get the oil to operating temperature to eliminate the condensation, or if it is even possible at those crazy low numbers from last year?
ReplyDeleteAt moderately cold temperatures like 0°F, even after riding 20+ miles, the oil pan temperature is around 160°F but the engine casing around the base of the cylinders is well over 200°F as it usually does. Maybe the deep sump oil pan with the additional oil capacity and large fins is cooling the oil pretty well... During the winter, I rarely see a lot of moisture in the oil. There is usually evidence in some places like the dip stick opening and the crankcase breather but not much of the milky brown in the oil.
DeleteSticking with 10w40 eh? I might switch to that if these cold snaps keep re-occuring! The battery on my 2014 is being replaced today, failed me again last night after a party...it's been getting worse and worse, just not holding a charge; and I'm still using 20W50 in the engine so not making it any easier on the battery.
ReplyDeleteCan the monopod be adjusted so it's lined up with the rig's centerline?
Yes, sticking with 10w40 and not riding when it's really cold. I am on my second battery already. The stock one was around 3-4 years old when replaced.
DeleteI guess I could lash the monopod to the other side of the rack but then my arm would probably take up half the frame...
DeleteNice. I didn't realize I missed your PBC videos until you posted this, so thank you. Still too damn cold for riding IMHO.
ReplyDeleteThank you, for the support. I didn't think that anyone looked at them beyond the PBC "judges". I already shot and edited the other two videos and have them "scheduled" to be released. One today and the other tomorrow.
