This morning, I needed to run some errands and recorded a couple more videos for the Polar Bear Challenge. After today's upload (2016 PBC #4), I still have four more in the queue. If I'm going to try and upload one every day, I think I'll need about 15 or 16 in reserve. One of the errands was to pick up some pearl barley to make Trobairiz' "beef" barley soup. I'm enjoying a delicious bowl right now while doing this post. This picture was taken next to the east ramp of the Fairbanks International Airport. There used to be all sorts of information displays here the last time I was out here. Not sure why they would take them down.
This is a frame from the GoPro. I'm on the Richardson Highway just getting ready to turn off at Badger Road. The sun is about an hour after sunrise. At this time of the year, this is about as high as it gets. The temperature is around -4°F at this point and it feels like my left Gerbing G3 glove is not working again. What a pain.
I turned around at the Santa Clause House. One of the really touristy things around here. Here is the Santa version of a "muffler man". Note the barb wire fence around the figure.
Below is the 4th PBC video but is not the one that I recorded today.
Just a short trip from College Coffeehouse to home via Yankovich Road. I went by the Large Animal Research Station but didn't stop since I couldn't see any musk ox near the fence. I got a slight clarification of the PBC rules in that, even though it's not stated anywhere, the rides (and videos) need to be done between November 1st and February 14th. So I included a correction in this video that mentions that fact. Unlike Tuesday and Wednesday, I just recorded one video. This particular video was recorded last Tuesday.
Another video for the Polar Bear Challenge. Most of the other participants are vlogging or video blogging. They are talking about things that they are concerned about. I don't have the camera mounted to my helmet nor do I have a microphone connected to the camera so I simply add text to the video. I'm not sure I have anything to say so the videos are not very interesting. The picture was taken today near Ann's Greenhouse while heading out towards Goldstream Valley. This will show up in PBC #5.
The video was recorded yesterday morning on way into town. The third video will be the return trip. Today's trip was also broken into two videos. I'm recording videos in advance as I will be out of the state in a couple of weeks.
So now it begins. If anyone else wants to play along, the site is http://polarbearchallenge.tk/ and the only requirements are one video per day and the starting temperature is below freezing. There are some other rules and they are listed on the site.
I recorded this video yesterday. Apparently, the rules allow the videos to be made anytime as long as it is below freezing. I could've had a bunch already made just waiting to be uploaded. For the next couple of weeks I'll be making at least two per day so I'll have some in the queue for when it's too cold or I'm out of town.
The chains are still on but after a couple of miles, I took them off since the intersections were completely free of snow and ice. Most of the roads still have a layer of ice.
