10 Years on Blogger

On May 1, 2007, I moved my blog to the Blogger platform. Initially, it was hosted on different university servers. The first two in Fairbanks run by the UA Public Relations office and the third on a server operated by the IT department on the Juneau campus. After that, someone must have decided that personal blogs shouldn't be on university servers. Up until that point, the only purpose of the blog was to encourage university staff and faculty to participate in a walking program which was part of a wellness initiative. I was one of several that were asked to start "blogging" about my participation and later started placing plastic bottles filled with poker chips with the "Start Walking" and university logos on them. Kind of like geocaching but with clues instead of coordinates. Back then, phones didn't have GPS capability and not everyone had a handheld unit. Other participants would collect chips from each cache and claim a prize.

The program ended that summer and I continued to post including a short post on the MSF class I took in August, 2007. Once it was on the Blogger platform, I was able to set up the blog.machida.us CNAME. Way back then I was also running a Wordpress instance on my home server (an old Digital Equipment Corp. 80386SX desktop). I thought about just moving the blog onto that machine but I preferred to rely on Google for authentication and not have anonymous comments. The Wordpress install was shut down a couple months later after I was able to move email and the web server for the machida.us domain elsewhere. Eventually, the web site was deleted and email was moved to the gmail platform.

Initially, the posts were very short and rarely had pictures as I didn't have much to say. 1530 posts later, I still don't have much to say...

  1. I hope you'll continue not saying much come the next ten years, RichardM, because we are still having fun, aren't we? By the way, my ten year anniversary is coming up in October. Cheers, SonjaM

    1. I'm sure I can continue to not say much. After all I have all that experience as a manager...

  2. Congratulations on the 10 years! I will be 10 in December, but with a paltry 320 posts. There have been a lot of bloggers who have quit posting over the years, so making 10 years seems like an accomplishment.

    1. Thank you! Blogging has turned into something that I enjoy doing. Kind of like a hobby. And Blogger has made it pretty easy though they don't spend much effort on their iPhone app...

  3. It's funny. I just posted about my own blogging startup and then minutes later come here and read about yours. I read most of the blogs you have links to and I wonder if sometimes we get material from each others posts because some weeks I sorta see a theme. Maybe that's what it's all about and I'm just realizing it.

    1. I think that is a real coincidence. I had actually written the post about a month back when I noticed that the 10 year mark was coming up and scheduled the post.

  4. Congrats on the anniversary. 1780 posts for me, though some are pretty short. Went over 10 this past August. Time flies eh?

    1. Time really does seem to fly. I think that your blog was one of the first ones I found after I picked up the airhead. I think I was searching for BMW...

    1. The first couple of years probably don't count as I think the average post was 1 paragraph and no pictures.

  6. Congratulations Richard, you were one of the bloggers who inspired me to have a crack at blogging back in late 2009. Still thoroughly enjoyable and may you continue for many more years.

    1. Thank you. I don't know how much effort I put in it. I know many that spend a lot of time and effort on their posts and it shows. Me, not so much.

  9. Richard, I've certainly enjoyed your blog for the relatively short time I've been reading it. Without it, I'd miss wonderful, little tidbits like the final lines (punchline) of this blogpost of yours. :D

    Keep it up!

  10. I'm not sure where I ran into your blog but I suspect that it was one of the many on Trobairtz's sidebar. Something that is lost if you enable the mobile version.

  11. I like reading about weird stuff that I would never want to do. Motorcycling in snow, working with a bear guard and stuff like that . I have yet to encounter a Korean crispy rice bowl but it is on my mind. Sometimes I announce to the room at work that its minus 22 in Fairbanks and I get brickbats for bringing up unpleasant truths for tropical weaklings. But that's the point I suppose.

    1. I'm glad I can provide a little weirdness to your day. After all, I hear that there is a shortage of weirdness in KW…
