Happy New Year!

On last Wednesday's #MotoChat on Twitter, the topic was riding plans for the coming year. Upon reading the topic, I was sort of dumbstruck that I hadn't even given it a moments thought. Maybe because the current riding season hasn't really ended. This picture was taken only one day away from home at the end of my trip last summer. I posted that I had no real plans except riding around Alaska and the Yukon Territory.

Do others have riding plans already?

BTW, if you have a Twitter account, please join #MotoChat at 1:00pm Pacific time on Wednesday.

  1. Richard, travel plans are evolving but will not necessarily include a lot of two-wheeled activities this year (if you exclude the pedal powered way). Last year's epic trip has to last for a while.

    1. Before Wednesday afternoon, I hadn't even given it a moments thought. Besides being told not to plan anything for the last weekend in June.

    1. Not at all sure where to go. I just found out when D2D (Dust to Dawson) is this year and it isn't at the same time as our family reunion so maybe there again. And Seward for the reunion. Not at all sure beyond that.

  3. "Maybe because the current riding season hasn't really ended." I love it, Richard... It's the middle of winter, and you live in Alaska.

Three years ago I hit Colorado's San Juan Mountains by dual-sport, and again last summer. I want to go back over and over and over again, of course, but I really should expand my riding horizons further. Last summer I hit the badlands of Wyoming for the first time, and there's much more to see (and not to see) there, so maybe I should return. Some of my best rides and dual-sport camping adventures have simply happened, so no doubt I'll rely a bit on whim.

How 'bout you, man? You seem to appreciate good planning (and no doubt that's important), but does spur-of-the-moment play a role in your moto-adventures?

    1. Planning is only required since any out-of-state trip ends up being at least a month long. Within the state, spur-of-the-moment is kind of the norm. But just about any trip that isn't out and back ends up being at least a couple of days. A couple of summers ago, I went up the haul road to the Arctic Circle. Planning amounted to find out if gas was still available at the Yukon River bridge. If not, it changes the way you do the trip.

Your dual-sport trips sound great. I had spent a lot of time off road in Utah quite a bit back around 40 years ago.

  4. No trips planned for us yet. We do hope to get out on two wheels more this year - weather be damned.

  5. Happy New Year to you and yours as well RichardM. No major plans, my stuff tends to be impromptu and like you, the riding season never really ends for me.

    1. Thank you. No major plans mean that all trips are < 1 oil change interval?

  6. Richard, I have such a hard time thinking about where to go if ... when. So, what are you and Martha planning? If you had a south, east destination I'm thinking somewhere in the middle (east coast / west coast) might be an awesome plan. Happy planning - Happy New Year,

    1. I have no plans. One of these years I want to visit the Maritime Provinces. In 2017 there will probably be another trip to the PNW as there'll be another reunion. This year the family reunion is in Alaska so no road trip needed.

The Middle East coast is just too hot and humid for me and the middle west coast is surrounded by desert. The Midwest just seems to be more hot and humid. All that leaves is Canada…

    1. That takes a lot of advanced planning. When do the classes start?
