Barrow Dawn-to-Dusk

Today was foggy probably due to open water. You can just see the open water as a dark like in the distance. I was told that there was a sizeable crack in the sea ice near the NARL campus but I couldn't find it. There was some concern as there is a group coming up next week to work out on the ice.

The was taken from the same location except looking south. The airport is on the left and if you look closely, you can just make out some of the dishes out on the satellite farm. The sky colors here are fabulous.

I was able to record another video with the GoPro plugged into a powered USB hub. The video was started at 8:53am and runs until 4:05pm. It was recorded as individual frames taken at 30 sec intervals and the resulting video was slowed down to 85% to make it match the selected music.

I also have uploaded the PBC videos that I had recorded on my one day back home last Monday.

PBC #25 - Recorded running around town in the morning.

PBC #26 - The ride out to Fox, AK

PBC #27 - The return trip from Fox, AK

  1. Dang--sunrise/set in the Arctic Circle... What a cool thing that must be to witness. Thanks for sharing the great videos, Richard.

Seeing as how it doesn't really rise, I wonder if the phenomenon shouldn't be called something else: Sunlurk? Suntease? Sunskulk?

Do the locals have any special vocabulary for when the sun doesn't really rise?

    1. Glad you liked the video. At higher latitudes, the dawn/dusk cycles last so much longer than at lower latitudes since the sun moves at a shallower angle. So we get to enjoy the wonderful sky colors much longer.

Still asking around. Most can't think of anything but suggested asking some that know a lot more of the Iñupiaq language.

    2. After asking several people, they couldn't think of any special terms beyond light.

    3. That's too bad--I enjoy adding new lingo to my vocabulary. Not that it would have done me much good, as the sun always fully rises and fully sets in my neck of the woods.

Ha! This is funny: I'm listening to Pandora here at work, and as I was reading your reply, The Beatles' Here Comes The Sun came on the radio.

  2. The light in the time-lapse is so surreal. How cool you get to see it in person.

I liked that the ice and sky appear the same color in your first picture too.

    1. The light and the color of the sky at this time of year is wonderful. I didn't bring up a GoPro housing with me or the tripod mount so I just set it up looking out of a window.

The pictures were taken from a bluff at the end of the airport runway.

    1. Thank you! Today isn't as foggy so I have it set up again to see if the colors come out better. On Wednesday, the wonderful sky colors came out after the battery ran dead.

  4. Richard, this was beautifully put together. Very calming with your selection of music, almost Zen-like.

  5. Just viewed the first video and you should be proud of that! Simple and effective. Music is perfect. At one split second moment it was as if the viewer went underwater. Really beautiful.

    1. Thank you! The days here have been a bit windy so there has been a lot of blowing snow. Today is calm so I was going to give it another shot. Plus, I found an old "game camera" that could be set to do time lapse. I was going to try it out since it looks like it has never been used.

  6. Ry Austin asks a good question about local vocabulary: Is there a term, a word for different light?

  7. Richard thank you for sharing your very different view of the world with us. I agree with Sonja, the choice of music was perfect.
