Looong Delay…

No picture for today. I called Raceway this morning and they ran through some of the long list of stuff that is being replaced. The splines on the sidecar drive were almost completely gone (I kinda thought that's what they would find). And since some of the parts (cylinders, rings) being replaced will mean that the engine must go through a break-in period, there may some changes to my near-term plans such as I may not head to Helena, MT. Too much high speed Interstate. He mentioned that one of the parts was so worn that I may have been on the side of the road in another 100 miles. Parts should be arriving over the next couple of days and they are targeting next Wednesday for it to be completed. Quite a delay in my trip. Or can there be a delay if there was never a schedule?

Just a look at one of the many fires along the Alaska Highway right now. I believe this one was at milepost 250 north of Fort St. John and closed the highway. The picture is from the Internet somewhere. I found it on ADVrider.com but I suspect it's from some news service.

One last thing. A time lapse of the northern part of the Cassiar Hwy and into Stewart, BC.

  1. Richard, I'm at a loss here of what to even say other than I hope you get back on the road, safely and solidly very soon.

    1. I'm not very upset at all. Just glad that it's being taken care of. Though I am somewhat surprised at the amount of stuff that is being repaired. And I have confidence that they know what they're doing.

  2. I like the video. Were there bug splotches or mud on the lens? It was cool watching the trees change, too. I know it is a bump in your travels, but I am glad you aren't stuck along the side of the road, or even better yet, you and I aren't stuck along the side of the road on the Oregon coast. In the rain. This may be good for your mom, though.

    1. I think they were bug splotches. I had a hard time remembering to clean off the lens whenever I stopped.

  3. That forest fire doesn't look good at all. It is scary to think how many of them are raging in the west right now.

    See you in the morning.

  4. That's a long time, hope you found some cheap lodging. All costs to be covered under warranty though?

    1. never mind, I see you're staying with family so that's good. You wouldn't want to be a long time guest/leech like someone who will remain nameless..... ;)

  5. Too bad about all the work that's needed and the delay. Seems a lot - is it a particularly high mileage bike?

  6. Weee, I like the time-lapse video, at least you have a break for editing some of your pics from the road ;-) I am glad that nothing broke off while riding, and it looks like the hack is in good hands.

The forest fires remind me of summer 2004 when lots of roads in Alaska where blocked, and we had to make an, albeit pleasant, detour into BC.

    1. There is a lot of video. A 64 GB card is a lot of video and photos. I tried to keep it to 10 sec clips but there is still a couple of hours of footage.

Actually, the muffler did fall off on the highway. I had to pound it back into shape to fit back on the bike.

I'm told that the fires in Alaska are even worse this year than the year that you visited.

  7. Richard,

I guess though the comfort in all of this is that you werent stranded in some remote area and have no means pf repairing the bike. Is this common to Urals? Seems like a good deal of stuff wrong with the bike.

PS I sat on a BMW RnineT today and loved it, too bad it was $20k.....

    1. So, the RnineT now parked in your garage? They are really nice but I thought thaat it was less than $20k...

I'm led to believe that it is not common. And between arrival in Corvallis and getting the rig back will be two weeks. I'm just glad to get it repaired so I don't have to worry.

  8. Richard - nope not in the driveway, wish it was, but the price before the 12% provincial sales tax and probable accessories brings up near the $20k mark. it was pretty sexy and nice though!

hope the rig gets all sorted soon!
