Day 23 - Crater Lake

Got an early start this morning and to try and get some uncrowded photos of Crater Lake. This iPhone pano is my favorite. It was a chilly 52°F this morning and by noon in Bend, it had only warmed up to 73°F. From a weather perspective, I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day.

At the rim, the elevation was over 7000' and the Ural still popped a lot as if it was running really lean. Most carbureted vehicles have the opposite problem at higher elevations. Based on this behavior, I decided to head towards Raceway Ural again as they are thinking that the timing may have slipped as they had to remove and re-install bits and pieces when they replaced the timing cover. Since I wouldn't have made it to their shop until late afternoon, I agreed to bring it by first thing in the morning. So I'm back in Corvallis this evening. For the others wanting to play along, it also "pops" when decelerating cruising down the road at 35 mph in 3rd (no load) in addition to when the engine is cold. Also, the engine needs to be revved up before engaging the clutch or it just bogs down and dies. No power. Even on flat ground, I need to leave it in 3rd up to over 50 mph before shifting to 4th or the engine bogs down. i.e. no low end torque.

This evening, I got this in a fortune cookie. Sounds ominous, eh?

  1. A popping motorcycle... That would be running right for a Harley. :)

Yes, that fortune is pretty spooky.

    1. This hasn't popped except when it needs to go to reserve.

  2. Did my comment get deleted, or did I not press Publish. The later sounds more like me.
I am looking forward to seeing you tomorrow! Let's hope the shop fixes the pop, the B & B's reserved for next week don't take cancellations! I don't want to go by myself in a rented car. Well, I'd take your mom with me.........

  3. Sure sounds like something in the timing is off....does it have the stock ducati ignition or powerarc?

  4. Hope they can fix it. I am sure this is more than discouraging for you. Funny, I got that exact fortune in my cookie in P.E.I.

    1. I'm pretty confident that they can. They are pretty sure that's it's ignition timing.

I got a kick out of the fortune cookie but little confidence in its ability. ;-)

    2. Perhaps every fortune cookie all over the world now has the same message ... it's telling us, we must be flexible. Flexibility is a good trait!

  5. What a great pano!!!
I'll keep my fingers crossed that they can find the root cause of the popping. Just don't think about the fortune cookie's message...

    1. Thank you! I thought the view was gorgeous. I would heartily recommend visiting Crater Lake. I'm not sure what took me so long. I think it's because I just thought of it as just another alpine lake.

  6. Beautiful shot of Crater Lake.

Bummer you had to return before the reunion but at least the weather is cooler.

    1. Thank you. Given the performance of the Ural, I didn't mind getting it fixed. But too bad it needed fixing. But then again, if I didn't purchase the new timing cover, the ignition would never have been touched.

    2. Good point, I thought many times during the AK trip how I shouldn't have swapped out a major component (Ducati ignition for PowerArc) in the midst of a long trip.
