Day 20 - Salem, OR

I took the rig to Raceway Ural this morning and gave them the long list of issues that I wanted them to look at. They looked a the paperwork and verified that it is still covered under the extended warranty. After going through the valves on the right side of the engine, sidecar drive splines, exhaust header, right muffler, final drive shift mechanism I thought that was everything. When unloading some of my gear from the trunk, I saw the kick start lever. I brought that over and they said the same thing that I thought i.e. "are you kidding! These things are really sturdy! We'll have to send a picture to Ural!".

I may be here for at least the rest of the week while they disassemble, identify and order the parts, then reassemble. Oh well…

After filling out the work order, one of their employees gave me a ride back to Corvallis. Pretty generous!

  • Right valves needed to be adjusted every 1000 km for the last 5000 km (possibly worn lifters, worn cam or valve recession)
  • Broken exhaust header weld
  • Broken muffler mounting bolt (damaged muffler)
  • 2WD engagement shaft on the final drive is really loose (possibly just a worn cotter pin inside of the final drive)
  • 15° of rotational movement between the sidecar drive shaft and the wheel (worn splines)
  • Broken kick starter lever
  • Broken rear brake spring

  1. Glad they are going to fix everything right up. And a ride back to Corvallis, that is pretty nice of them.

Let us know if you need anything while you are here. We have extra bikes........just sitting in the garage while we work........just sayin'

  2. Looks like a pretty lengthy list but happy you can have it done free of charge. Meanwhile while stuck in Corvallis, check out Roadsideamerica.Com for some odd things in your area.

    1. Not as scenic as where you are but I'm not complaining. So many things that could go wrong on something complex like a motorcycle.

Maybe I should stick to bicycles...

  3. Get Blue all patched up for my trip! I hope you don't get bored, and that you have a way around town. Show Mom my post. She's getting some of the same pictures in the mail.

    1. I suggested that they could just substitute the battleship blue one in the picture (new 2015 model) but they thought not...

    1. One of the reasons I took the Ural instead of the BMW is that the Ural was still under warranty. Though some say that I was tempting fate. And the sidecar drive problem was there before I left but didn't want to risk damaging the sidecar bearings during disassembly.

    2. Wise move, Richard. Besides, the BMW likely wouldn't have provided as many mini-adventures, as many stories to tell.

Forget bicycles--go with a compromise: I've checked out Motoped's Survival Bike on the web--it's a wild looking creation. https://motoped.com/survival/

  5. And I thought I had repair woes, thanks for making me feel so much better Richard. I have a stripped speedometer gearbox and a headlight out, not to mention no idea why the check engine/oil light came on as there was plenty of oil. Good luck with your repairs. My mechanic has promised to have mine done by Wednesday.

  6. Quite a list, hopefully its just something minor for item 1. 5 should be as simple as replacing the component. Hadn't been aware that the kickstart lever had broken.

Question. Do you have trip interruption insurance with your motorcycle insurance, it would cover some of the costs of waiting for repairs such as lodging?

    1. Item 1 is the real unknown. Everything else is pretty straight forward. Still, they said they need to separate the sidecar, pull and dig into the final drive and possibly pull the engine of the cam looks bad. Kind of depends what they find. The kickstart came off in my hand as I was turning the engine over to check the valves on Sunday morning. Picture on the "Day 19" post.

And, no trip interruption insurance. I took it to Raceway since lodging was conveniently available and I am confident in their ability. The valves adjustment intervals wasn't accelerating so I was confident that I could reach here without a failure.

  7. Oh my, that looks like a long list. Hopefully the mechanics can fix all this quickly and get you back on the road.
Very generous, to provide for a ride.

    1. It is a long list but most is easy if you have access to the tools and parts and experience. I'm confident that Raceway has all three.

  8. It's just the Ural Delay Factor at work. When I break down I am glad if it is in a comfortable spot. On that you hit the jackpot.
