A New Low Temp Record

A slightly different view. This is from the University looking northeast. Those hills are kind of where we live and I am parked at the top of a "snow dump". At the top of a hill where they push snow off of the hill. Today, after stopping for a quick cup of coffee, I met Bridget at a lighting store to look for a dining room fixture. While I was getting ready to leave, I noticed that it was -20°F on the rear rack mounted thermometer. A perfect opportunity to do another PBC video.

Instead of simply heading home, I headed for Fox on the Steese Expressway. Then headed west on Goldstream Road to the University. I stopped along the way to check the thermometer as I had noticed that the OAT gauge (Outside Air Temperature) was indicating below -20°F. The thermometer on the rear rack indicated that it was -25°F. This would be a new low temperature for me. The only part that could feel the cold were my feet and face. I checked the temperature again near the university farm and it was still -20°F. When I took the picture up on campus, it was +18°F. A really strong inversion. Not that much of an elevation difference.

After getting home, I noticed that the left cylinder valve cover was dripping oil on my boot. One sure sign that it's below 0°F.

  1. The temperatures you ride in are unseen here in the sticks. I don't remember anything below -20 in a long, long time.

Reading your description my mind kept going to Jack London stories. And a sidecar rig (don't tell Dom) seems more and more like the perfect winter ride.

    Be careful in the cold.

    1. This is closer to normal for January and February. A lot colder, as in -40°, is unusual.

I'd have to agree with you on the utility of a sidecar rig. Completely practical.

  2. Richard, you just noticed it was colder than ever and you thought it was a great day for a ride ... well done. Cold feet no doubt! Do you have any heated footwear?

    1. I had recorded a short video earlier but it was only -11°F. So started a new one once I saw the temperature. I probably should've started another one at -25°F. (Obsessed)

    2. No heated insoles. Just wool socks and my old leather work boots.

  3. Wow, the coldest temps I had ever ridden in were -5C equaling 23F. And that felt already pretty nippy. -20F plus windchill from riding... oh my, that is friggin' cold. You must officially be a Polar Bear, because these are no temperatures for the average Joe (or Jane). Well done, Richard!

    1. It would feel pretty cold without a decently sized windshield and bar end mitts not to mention heated grips and gear. With all that, not a big deal at all.

  4. I really like the two photos. Sunny, fresh, bright.

I wish there was an "air fence" as well as a snow fence we could put up to keep your cold air up there where you enjoy it. Down to minus 30 is roaring our way this weekend. I'm so happy to be taking my trip south I could cry...

    1. And that's the way it feels "Sunny, fresh, bright".

  5. Some day, some time, we're going to read Richard say, "too cold for riding." It has to happen, doesn't it??

    1. Does it? At -25°F, you could tell that it was kinda cold but not unrideable at all. I'm waiting for -40°. That would make a good photo...

  6. Wow, I have a hard time keeping up with all your PBC activities, riding through winter wonderland. The GoPro position on the right is nice!

    1. I keep thinking of just posting periodically but the PBC site says only one post per day which means that if I make a video I should post it on YouTube or I may get backed up.

But then again, I've been off from my job since 12/24 so maybe too much free time...
