Christmas Eve Ride and PBC #2

Went for another PBC ride this morning with a starting temperature of -14°F. I had ridden to College Coffeehouse to meet with some of the regulars and the place was almost deserted with it being Christmas Eve. The PBC video began at College Coffeehouse heading west and north on Sheep Creek Rd. Then north on Miller Hill, west on Yankovich Rd, north on Dalton Trail, north on Goldfinch Rd, south on Ballaine Rd. Then east to the Dog Mushers Hall on Farmers Loop Rd which is where this high noon photo was taken.

The first PBC video was accepted so this is my second submission. Finding royalty free music continues to be the challenge as well as trying to edit down the videos. The GoPro remote doesn't work very well at colder temperatures and the battery in the GoPro camera seems to only last for about 15 minutes. It would be nice if they had someway to power it externally.

  1. Have you tried the royalty-free music offerings at incompetech.com? Your high noon looks like my dawn....

    1. No, so far I just look at the Google music site.

Kind of sad for high noon, eh?

  2. Ya know, you could put "deep thoughts" kind of verbiage on the bottom third of the screen as the rig rolls along......

    1. I thought about that but I don't have many "deep thoughts".

  3. One wonders what they get up to in a Dog Mushers Hall...better draw a veil over that thought.

    1. Dog mushing as in running dogs with either sleds or skis. They occasionally host races as that's what the small tower to the left is for. The announcer.

  4. Damn that looks cold. I thought our 0˚F temps last year were chilly.

    I am enjoying the videos.

    1. Actually, pretty nice to ride during the day. The norm these days is in the dark. I was just tooling around looking for interesting roads...

  5. My first thought was that Bobscoot would be so motivated by this!

The landscape is so very much like the roads in WI, especially NE. Your choice of music is reminiscent of the Icelandic band Sigur Ros. I listen to them all the time in the car and so your ride and music felt like my drives.

How far out of town do you have to go to get a high view over the city?

    1. Next time I'll go up to one of the views though there really aren't any great city views. The wide angle lens of the GoPro doesn't help. There was actually a good view about 3/4 way through right after turning back onto pavement.

  6. Richard, I find your vids very therapeutic, I even consider liking cold weather again. Here In Germany it is currently wet and too warm for the time of the year. Carry on with the PBC, your doing well.

    1. Thank you. I enjoy doing them though I'm thinking about adding more text as Dom suggested. I think that I really prefer snow to rain. The moisture just blows away with the wind...

  7. Love the high noon photo! It would take a Ural, an extra battery and a full heated suit for me to brave that kind of cold, hats off to ya!

    1. Pretty sad for high noon, eh? The heated jacket liner with flannel lined jeans work great with the RC light. More than adequate though I usually add a thin fleece liner over the heated liner when it's below 0°F. So all you really need is the Ural. Plus, no more concerns with alternator output.

    2. No more concerns with alternator output, hear, hear!

  8. Very nice video. I can say that because I watched snug as a bug in a rug, lying in a nice warm bed in Vancouver. It's so green here, that video seems like a fantasy of Christmas past.

    1. After a while things tend to skew so I'd say that it's nice and warm here as well. Only 21°F with fresh snow in the forecast. The nice thing about snow is that you stay dry.
