Cold and Clear

Another beautiful morning. It's still around an hour before sunrise, but it's still dark for my commute to the university. Much warmer today at +9°F compared to yesterdays -9°F. The repaired heated gear from Gerbings has still not arrived. I guess it's being shipped on the very slow version of FedEx. A week after the tracking info was sent to me, all the FedEx site says is "Label created". I believe that this is more Gerbings than FedEx as it took them almost two weeks after they received the items to even call and acknowledge that they were doing anything.

I had also tried an HDR version at the same time as the first picture but I don't really care for the color of the sky. Not very realistic and since two pictures are taken, there's a little more blur.

Thursday Evening Update - Gerbings told me on the phone that they ship FedEx or UPS and the tracking number they sent was a FedEx number. The package arrived today via USPS priority mail. I guess they tried FedEx and balked at the shipping cost and looked for another option. USPS priority is a great option when shipping to Alaska. So I shouldn't have given them flack earlier in the post.

  1. That stuff is coming our way soon. I just bought some dreadful plastic wrap for windows. I've never had to use that before, but this old house has forced me to live a different life.

It's true that enjoying winter is all about the clothing you wear. And I'd agree to that. But how do I find a winter coat for my brain?

    1. I haven't tried the plastic stuff for the windows yet. I suspect that it'll help our window sills as we get a lot of moisture on our windows. Winter coat for the brain seems to be how you look at things. I look at the above photos and don't see the cold at all. Just the beautiful sky and sunrise.

    2. I see that, too. It's a beautiful twilight. If I didn't love a part of winter- even in all its brutishness- I would have been out of here years ago- just anywhere. I WISH I could live with winter as easily as you do. It's not a choice for me; it's physiological.

  2. I am getting cold just looking at those pics, although I have to say the view is marvellous.

Martha had a good point, please let us know where to order a tuque to prevent our brains from freeze-up.

  3. Brrrr! You know me, not a fan of cold. :)
The pics are nice. I like the HDR. May not be realistic, but I love the saturated colors.

    1. When I first saw the HDR photo, I really liked the colors but the more I compared it with the regular photo, the more artificial it looked...

Not a fan of cold, just a fan of wet?

  4. Uuuh, looks realistically cold to me. Personally, I prefer the regular photo. Well, this is how I like winter: watching it on TV, from California. ;-)

    1. It was very pleasant today as I had a lot of running around campus today with multiple meetings on upper and lower campus as well as a farewell lunch off campus. Didn't even need the heated grips today just a fleece liner and a denim motorcycle jacket.

  5. -9F. That's too cold too soon for me. You have a kerosene jet burner in the sidecar pointed toward you right?

    1. No kerosene heater. The Roadcrafter, or any other one piece suit, traps the warmth pretty well. At -9°F there wasn't a "need" for heated gear though it would have been nice. Today, most of my running around was with a fleece liner under a denim motorcycle jacket. Insulated Carhartt jeans are wind proof enough.

I'll take cold and dry over cold and wet any day.

  6. I like those dawning colors backlighting the distant peaks.....couldn't get the rig in the shot eh? Got my Kolpin Grip Covers today, they're nice.....

    1. I thought about it but it would've been too much trouble. I could've used the flash to illuminate the foreground while doing a longer exposure on the background. I'm not as ambitious as you...

Is it easy to get your hands into the Koplin grip covers? And did you have to punch a hole for the mirror stems?

  7. yes on the hole punching, but no big deal....just put the covers where I wanted them, felt for the mounting hole of the mirror stem, a small cut, and voila.

    1. I was thinking of marking the spot then sewing a buttonhole at that point. Then it would be less likely to rip.

  8. To be sure, I plan on putting a plastic grommet of some sort on the hole to prevent ripping, perhaps even reinforce where the cut ends with some kevlar thread.
