Morning Sky

We've had some wonderfully nice days since our last warm spell w/rain. The roads are a little icy but traction is decent and everyone seems to be behaving themselves. This photo was taken yesterday morning about half an hour before sunrise. Of course, I had to get the rig into the photo somehow but the highlight was definitely the sky.

Today, the waning crescent moon looked pretty cool on the southern horizon while riding in. Since I didn't have a tripod, it took quite a few attempts to get an acceptable shot especially low light, handheld with a modest telephoto. I really like these southerly views with showing the profile of the Alaska Range. And we have great visibility today. Venus was a bit further to the east out of the frame.

  2. Richard:

Not sure whether you are using a REAL camera, or an iPhone. Many models now have "anti-shake" mode which fires off a sequence of photos and then blends the sharpest parts of each photo and makes ONE of out them all, using bits of each. It is precisely for times when you don't have a tripod handy.

anyway, love the colours. We had some nice reds this morning but nowhere to pull over, and I didn't have a Hack to pose. I thought you had HDR in your phone ?

    1. The first is an iPhone picture taken in HDR mode. The second is DSLR with anti-vibration turned on, ISO 400 and the 55-200mm at 68mm or ~102mm equivalent. This is an older Nikon and the you get a lot of digital noise at ISO 800 or above.

  4. Both images are beautiful! I like the sunrise for the colors (amd the rig) and the crescent moon for just that with the silohettes. Thank you.

    1. You're welcome. I couldn't pass up those dawn photos. Sunrise is still late enough to make pre-dawn photos easy.

  5. Brilliant, Richard. Please don't make me have to decide on one. I love both!

    1. Thank you, around here it is easy to get up in time for sunrise (at this time of year). Much harder during the warmer months…

  7. We seem too far apart to see the same moon and same planet. Mind you a sunrise at 7 am seems more civilized.

    1. I couldn't fit Venus in the frame though I could've done a panorama. Sunrise at 7 would mean almost Spring! Sunrise at 1am would also seem uncivilized?

  8. Very nice shots Richard! Time to carry a small tripod in the hack eh?

    1. Maybe. I even have a few of them laying around. I just don't think of it in the morning. I picked up a monopod last year that I took with me on our trip last June which would be ideal for times like this.
