Changes in Barrow

After a couple of days of work, this is all that is left of the chassis based network switch in Barrow. Each of the 16 now empty slots had a card with 24 network ports so I had to redo quite a few connections. I thought about removing the chassis from the rack once I emptied it out but decided that I'll wait until there are more strong backs available. For now, all it's consuming now is space. In this case, change is not necessarily good as I've lost flexibility and manageability with the change to standalone switches. Two of them are from the same manufacturer as the failed chassis and several others are made by a company that doesn't exist anymore. But at least there are plenty of spares.

On my way to the airport Sunday morning, I stopped by the new ASRC hotel. I don't know the new name as everyone just seems to refer to it as "the new ASRC hotel". it is built on wood pilings and looks like a bunch of modules stacked together. When I was last here in July, there wasn't anything here except for the pilings in the ground. There seems to be quite a few large construction projects in Barrow and I would assume that things are going good in their economy. Note how dark it is already and it's only October. I believe these pictures were taken at about 9 am.

One of the disasters over the summer is Pepe's North of the Border burned down. This was the Mexican restaurant that I've posted interior photos of over the years and is known for it's "over the top" flashy decor. I don't believe that there are plans to rebuild it but there is some construction going on. Maybe it's just to clear out the debris. We used to make a point of taking anyone new to Barrow there as they have a nice certificate for first timers to Barrow.

Time to start designing a Welcome to Barrow 1st visit certificate to be issued from the University. I like Mexican too. Woe is me if I visit and can't order enchiladas. I don't eat RAW so the Japanese is out.

I had to manage a Novel network with a patch panel and it was a pain keeping all the wires straight and documented

    1. This reduces the restaurant count in Barrow to 8, down from 11 last year. So there are plenty of other places for you to visit. I think that Arctic Pizza also does Mexican and Italian...

  2. The new hotel is made out of shipping containers? Did you get a chance to look inside? Houses and buildings made out of such I find fascinating.

    1. It looks like shipping containers but it's probably modular housing of some sort. No, it is still under construction. There are a variety of "hotels" in Alaska make this way. More like dorms or a construction camp with showers down the hall.

  3. That hotel does look like shipping containers. I hear building with them is kind of an in thing right now and is driving up the price of them.

Bummer about Pepe's, but at least you have a few other options.

    1. I remember some houses in Nome built of stacked containers then simply spray foamed and painted. Windows and doors were cut in. I have a picture of one that was 9 containers stacked 3 high. It was a pretty big house....

  4. The idea that you can be in a place where it's black as the Earl of Hell's waistcoat in the middle of the morning and still think about ordinary stuff like restaurant menus boggles the mind just slightly. When I take over the world Alaska will be evacuated and all former residents re educated on a beach in Hispaniola. It will be for their own good.
I take it the electronics still don't work. We have been ordered to be nice to IT at work as a way of rewarding vagueness or something.

    1. It's dark like that every night in KW. What's the difference?

I'd hate being relocated and reeducated. I moved to AK from CA as I wanted cooler weather and real seasons. Places like southern CA or FL drive me up the wall.

    2. Richard - you have two seasons: Frozen and Not Frozen. If you really want to experience all the (4) seasons you 'gotta' move to Ontario.

    3. I thought the seasons were Winter and Construction.

  5. How can you not love what Conchscooter writes? "Earl of Hell". How long would he last on an all expense paid visit?

No insurance to rebuild or just don't want to? If not, maybe someone else will take up where they left off. I'd think a nice warm and colorful and spicy Mexican restaurant in Barrow would be like a spa.

    1. Don't know about either Conchscooter or rebuilding Pepe's. I heard the owner has been in the hospital for a while in Anchorage. She has been a Barrow fixture for decades.

  6. Forgot to say I love those shipping container houses. Some are beautiful inside!

Maybe this building is meant to break apart in an earthquake and float away in separate parcels. Seems like a good idea, anyway...

    1. I don't think they are shipping containers but more likely Atco modular housing units. There are a lot of places in AK built with them. They are the same size as a container but made out of wood not steel.

  7. And I hope the owner of Pepe's recovers and returns to run the eatery. These local places are such an integral part of the community.

    1. I don't think that'll happen. Been ignoring a chronic disease for a long time.
